Males and females who withdrew from college during their freshman year were divided into withdrawers vs continuers, transfers vs nontransfers, and withdrew passing vs withdrew failing. A questionnaire survey of all students who discontinued their courses at the University of Sydney in 1973 identified four groups of such students. They are those who (1) had financial problems, (2) cited illness, (3) were not coping, and (4) had changed their life goals. The university's responsibility in dealing with them is considered. (LBH)

Of the 1216 students in this category 72 percent did not reply, but those who did indicated three motivating factors: the effect of the course or school on them as individuals; pressures of employment or distance; change in personal situation.
