This report shares the findings from the 2025 Ruffalo Noel Levitz (RNL) National Alumni Survey, a research study based on survey data from more than 50,000 alumni. In collaboration with 21 institutions, alumni were invited to describe their volunteer activity, what inspires them to give, satisfaction with and sense of current connection to their alma mater, communication channel preferences, and what is likely to motivate future engagement. The findings reveal: (1) the types of organizations or causes that alumni currently support through volunteering; (2) frequency of philanthropic activity and what would make alumni more likely to engage with their alma maters in the future; (3) how giving and alumni participation vary dramatically by generation, with the oldest generation of alumni contributing two-thirds of alumni dollars; and (4) the impact of student loan debt on charitable giving. Practitioners and leaders can use these data to reflect on what can be learned from graduates of their institutions and find new ways to listen more closely to better understand what they need to feel connected and engaged.
