Designing and Maintaining a Well-Functioning Academic Program Advisory Board
Penny Quinn
Assessment Update, v37 n2 p8-9, 14 2025
The purpose of an academic advisory board is to provide feedback and recommendations to college representatives for an identified academic program or grouping of programs. It is a mechanism through which academic program representatives, typically faculty and program coordinators and/or department chairs, maintain consistent connection with representatives within the career field(s) associated with the academic program(s) to ensure students within the identified program(s) are best prepared to successfully enter and succeed in their chosen career field. A highly functioning academic advisory group can be a valuable tool in the program assessment toolbox. Remember to form the committee thoughtfully, ensure they remain aware that their role is an advisory one, guide them with well-planned conversations, keep their feedback a priority in the process, close the loop as quality information is gained from the group, ensure the board is made aware when their recommendations are implemented in some way, and reinforce program appreciation for their involvement.
