Tobacconist/Wooden Indian Statues, Material Culture, and a Culturally Sustaining Path Forward in Art Education
Browning M. Neddeau1; Marcos S. Madril2
Studies in Art Education: A Journal of Issues and Research in Art Education, v66 n2 p163-177 2025
In a world filled with wooden Indians, our work examines the use of wooden Indians in art education. We tell stories, provide historical records of American Indian mascot imagery leading up to and through wooden Indians, and guide listeners into our work in material culture and culturally sustaining pedagogies in the art classroom. As American Indians in the United States, we center our live(d) experiences for future generations to thrive in our absence. Our lesson offerings are an attempt to decolonize the embedded coloniality in art education.
