Journal of Chemical Education, v102 n8 p3366-3376 2025
This study describes an educational strategy of forming transdisciplinary work teams--with students from different careers and semesters--for developing academic projects as a collaborative learning tool. This strategy was implemented in the elective course Process Design, which involved developing projects in industrial processes. As a final product, the students generated the typical process flowsheets and constructed 3D models, such as a scale representation of the plants. One of the most notable contributions of the proposed educational strategy was establishing a common language between students from different careers, allowing them to communicate and collaborate effectively to achieve the project's objectives. The students recognized the importance of a transdisciplinary approach to the sound development of engineering projects while maintaining a holistic perspective. Finally, the students presented the 3D models at academic fairs in different educational institutions as a campaign to promote and disseminate industrial processes to elementary, middle, and high schoolers. From these experiences, surveys and interviews were applied that made it possible to (i) assess the effectiveness of transdisciplinary teamwork, development of communication and teamwork skills, and understanding of industrial project development in the Process Design students and (ii) quantify the interest of schoolers in industrial processes and industrial chemistry.
