The Predictive Ability of the Big Five Personality Traits in Self among University Students

Background/purpose: This study aimed to identify the level of self among Al al-Bayt University students in Jordan based on gender and academic specialization and examine the predictive ability of the Big Five personality traits (extraversion, neuroticism, openness to experience, conscientiousness, and agreeableness) in students' general self-scores. Materials/methods: A sample of 630 students participated in the study. The Big Five Personality Traits scale (Jaradat & Abu Ghazal, 2014) and the Self Scale (Atoum et al., 2023) were administered to collect data. Results: The findings revealed a medium level of general self-scores among students, with statistically significant differences favoring males. Additionally, the big five personality traits collectively predicted 47.7% of the variance in general self-scores. Conclusion: The study underscores the significant role of personality traits in predicting self-levels among university students, with notable gender differences. These findings contribute to understanding the relationship between personality and self, offering implications for psychological and educational interventions.
