Immigrant Is Not a Bad Word: Knowing and Naming Immigration in Your Classroom
Melissa Adams Corral; Sarah Gallo; Gabrielle Oliveira
Language Arts, v102 n6 p318-331 2025
Ten years ago, Patricia Sánchez gave "Language Arts" readers access to a valuable set of information and tools to best serve immigrant students. Today, shifting immigration policies at the local, state, and national levels have continued to impact classrooms. Here, the authors respond to teachers trying to make sense of the changes and new demands in their classrooms to better understand the policy landscape that is directly impacting their work. The authors write from the perspective that immigration is normal and should be treated as such in classrooms and schools, even in the current climate of restrictions on teachers' speech. This article provides updates from the past decade and free resources teachers can access for current information as policies continue to change. The authors then focus on the kinds of practices teachers can advocate for at their schools and implement in their language arts classrooms to contribute to building communities of care.
