In the followup to a study conducted in 1977, the 50 state departments of education were resurveyed to determine the availability of orientation and mobility specialists for the visually impaired in the public schools. The McCarthy Screening Test, the psychological screening test used in a Vancouver pilot project, was administered to 796 kindergarten children. Among findings was that the McCarthy can predict about two of every three students who will subsequently be referred or who will not meet grade expectations. (Author/SB)

Identifies different patterns of wife abuse, using a multivariate quantitative taxonomic procedure to delineate five homogeneous subgroups of abused women. The McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities (MSCA) was administered to 80 urban black preschoolers. Five years later, 68 of these children were retested. This investigation demonstrated the predictive validity of the MSCA for urban black children against several criterion measures, including scores on elementary school reading tests. (Author/GK)
