Descriptors: Biological Influences, Ecological Factors, Evolution, Human Development
Ernst, Leonard – Nat Sch, 1970
Experiments in "memory transfer may eventually lead to laboratory synthesis of brain materials. (MK)

Sayles, Daniel G. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1971
Stutterers and nonstutterers were compared on measures of speech behavior, perseveration (flicker fusion threshold), and neurologic function (EEG recording under various conditions). (KW)

Piggott, Leonard R.; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1972
Measured were variations in the brain activity of a child with suspected cerebral disturbance, EEG abnormality, and academic retardation while performing different cognitive activities. (Author/KW)

Kaplan, Arnold R.; Zsako, Steven – Amer J Ment Deficiency, 1970
A similar version was presented at a joint session of the American Academy on Mental Retardation and the American Association on Mental Deficiency (May, 1969). (Author)
Descriptors: Biological Influences, Downs Syndrome, Drafting, Exceptional Child Research
Gould, Stephen Jay – Natural History, 1977
Offers an opposing view to Darwin's statement that evolution occurs through gradual change, using fossil species and modes of evolution to lend support to the author's model of "punctuated equilibria," in which... "Lineages change little during most of their history, but events of rapid speciation occasionally punctuate this…

Galaburda, Albert M. – Learning Disabilities: A Multidisciplinary Journal, 1997
This paper summarizes research currently being conducted on the biologic underpinnings of learning disorders, particularly dyslexia. The research findings discussed are derived from studying neuroanatomic, neurophysiologic, neurogenetic, neuroimaging, and behavioral characteristics in animal models that exhibit developmental brain anomalies and…

Galaburda, Albert M. – Annals of Dyslexia, 1989
Autopsy analysis of eight dyslexic brains found that the ordinary asymmetry in a language-relevant area of the temporal lobe was missing. The greater development of the right side may reflect an increase in the total number of neurons involved in language processing, resulting in changes in interhemispheric interactions. (JDD)

Langfitt, Thomas W.; Asbury, Carolyn H. – Issues in Science and Technology, 1996
Discusses scientific literature on childhood potential to understand the dynamics of child development and childhood outcomes in the context of beneficial and deleterious genetic and environmental influences. (MKR)

Meyer-Bahlburg, Heino F. L.; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1995
Examines the hypothesis that prenatal estrogens contribute to the development of human sexual orientation. Several groups of women with a history of prenatal exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES) were compared with several samples of control women. Findings showed that more DES-exposed women than controls were rated as bisexual or homosexual,…

Rushton, J. Philippe; Osborne, R. Travis – Intelligence, 1995
Data from 236 pairs of black twins and white twins aged 13-17 years were used to examine genetic and environmental factors influencing cranial size, an indirect estimate of brain volume. Genetic factors are required to account for the phenotypic variance in cranial capacity. (SLD)

Malt, Barbara C. – Cognitive Psychology, 1995
Major proposals that psychologists have made about how humans segment their world into categories are reviewed. The anthropological literature that bears on the same issues is explored, noting its implications for psychological theory. Cross-cultural data provide substantial constraints for theories of category coherence. (SLD)

Ortony, Andrew; Turner, Terence J. – Psychological Review, 1990
The content of claims that basic emotions are the primitive building blocks of other nonbasic emotions is examined. It is suggested that the concept of basic emotions as elementary psychological primitives which explain other emotions is a false concept. An alternative approach is proposed. (SLD)

Willerman, Lee; Schultz, Robert T. – Intelligence, 1995
The relationship between mental retardation and brain size is discussed. Research suggests that a common path for many otherwise idiopathic mild retardation cases (genetic or environmental) could be small brain size, indicating reduced information processing capacity. Suggestions are made for further research on neuron number. (SLD)
