Data from nearly 30,000 pregnant and third decade (20-29 years) mothers show that small infant size among teenage mothers is consistent with the mother's size and not directly related to early age at conception. Third decade mothers of comparable size give birth to infants with essentially the same characteristics and problems. (Author/GC)

Investigated the identity formation in pregnant adolescents (N=30) as compared to a group of nonpregnant adolescents (N=30). Used the Ego Identity Scale to obtain a measure of ego identity. Analyzed data in relation to six hypotheses. Found pregnant adolescents scored significantly lower on the Ego Identity Scale. (RC)

Assesses the relation between cocaine use and the risk of low birth weight in Alameda County (California) through a population-based case-control study of women with low birth-weight infants. Results show that cocaine use increases the risk of both pre-term delivery and intrauterine growth retardation. Limitations of this study are discussed. (JS)
