Surveyed 2,207 Alabama residents to determine public perceptions about employer responsibility for social services. Results indicated that the majority of respondents believe employers have some responsibility for drug and alcohol counseling, family problem counseling, and day care. In an experimental study involving health and social service professionals, a second mailing of a questionnaire to initial nonrespondents in a mail survey was found more cost-effective as a means of increasing returns than attempts to conduct telephone interviews, although telephone contacts suggested several reasons for nonresponse. Surveyed 41 gerontological counseling educators and 253 directors of Area Agencies on Aging to compare their ratings of goals and roles of gerontological counselors. Results showed a wide gap between educators and administrators, but the administrators indicated that counseling can be incorporated into existing aging service networks. (JAC)
