Wehmeyer, Michael; Schwartz, Michelle – Exceptional Children, 1997
A follow-up study of 80 students (ages 17-22) with cognitive disabilities for whom data regarding self-determination had been collected prior to their high school exit found that the self-determined students were more likely to have achieved more positive adult outcomes, including being employed and earning more per hour. This study surveyed 94 school leavers with mental retardation or learning disabilities 1 to 3 years later. Students who were more self-determined fared better across multiple quality of life categories, including employment and access to health and other benefits, financial independence, and independent living. Data from the Benefit-Cost Project at the University of Minnesota are analyzed, involving 239 mildly handicapped students who had exited school between 1977 and 1984.
