Renzulli, Joseph – Gifted Child Quarterly, 1982
The myth that the gifted constitute 3 percent to 5 percent of the population is countered by a discussion of two types of giftedness: schoolhouse giftedness in which students excel in testtaking, and creative/productive giftedness in which students may not have high IQs. The 3 percent to 5 percent figure is seen to equate giftedness with IQ. (CL)

Manning, Sandra – Kappa Delta Pi Record, 2006
Today, more than ever, student diversity typifies the general education classroom. In most classrooms, the range of cognitive abilities is vast. Inclusion and legislative mandates challenge general educators to design and implement teaching and behavior management strategies that will ensure success for all student groups--including the gifted and…

Pereles, Daphne A.; Omdal, Stuart; Baldwin, Lois – Gifted Child Today, 2009
Many books and articles have been written about a Response to Intervention (RtI) model of service delivery for students who are struggling learners. However, little has been written about this model's usefulness as a means of addressing the needs of advanced learners or twice-exceptional learners whose needs may be both remedial and advanced. The…

Verbic, Srdjan – Online Submission, 2007
Since the very beginning of Petnica Science Center students do small research projects in order to learn the basic scientific methodology. Preparing reports and papers is unavoidable part of such learning. After 25 years of work, it is perfectly clear that students learned how to present their results and write papers. However, such results do not…

Md-Yunus, Sham'ah – Childhood Education, 2007
Children are often far more gifted than their parents or teachers realize--and in different ways. IQ tests do not measure creative talent. Most children start life with valuable creative potential. Unfortunately, many of them have it knocked out of them, so to speak, by the time they reach the 4th grade. It is not that parents and teachers…

Shavinina, Larisa V. – High Ability Studies, 2007
This paper presented the achievements of the expert performance approach. The 10-year rule of expertise is one of them, a very practical rule. However, the expert performance approach does not answer some important questions directly arising out of its main statements. The cognitive-developmental theory of giftedness can help in this regard…

Winebrenner, Susan – Understanding Our Gifted, 2007
With the passage of the "No Child Left Behind Act" (NCLB), the emphasis is for all children to reach proficient levels. Since they already work above this benchmark, the needs of gifted students are often de-emphasized. If teachers define learning as moving forward from the knowledge a student already has, they find that those who are at…

Lurz, Priscilla Ramirez – Understanding Our Gifted, 2007
While people have learned much from special education about using an array of services, from the least restrictive to the most restrictive learning environments, public schools still base many instructional decisions on a child's chronological age. Are the child's interests best served by being grouped all day solely by the number of years lived?…
