Four years of experience with an undergraduate program in a new community-based medical school are described in which students are involved over a two-and-a-half year period in the delivery of primary care in rural and semi-rural community health centers. A medical school survey examined student and faculty willingness to use computers and the prevalence of the attitudes that computers in medicine are a potential threat to employment, neither convenient nor responsive to physicians' needs, and potentially debasing to the human role in medical practice. Primary care physicians were surveyed regarding their preference for lecture, hands-on, and problem-based learning sessions. Analyses found no significant relationship between individual learning style as determined by the instrument used and instructional preferences.
