Results of a survey of all U.S. and Canadian optometry schools regarding curriculum status and philosophy are reported, including requirements, clinical experience availability, instructor consultations, reading, optional coursework, continuous care, and student observation. The status of faculty evaluation in optometric education and techniques contributing significantly to teaching quality are reviewed. Institutions are encouraged to provide incentives for faculty development with a favorable organizational climate and time. (MSE)

Due to criticism that optometrists are not adequately trained to use drugs for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes, the course of study taken by optometry students was compared to that taken by medical students in terms of faculty capability, courses content, and relationship to career needs.

Dental technology program administrators surveyed supported the credentialing of health manpower, felt program accreditation was valuable in meeting demands for educational quality assurance, and saw certification of technicians as beneficial but of little value in terms of recognition and economic gain for the credential holder. Findings regarding formats and scoring formulas for multiple-choice test items with more than one correct response are presented. Strong cluing effects in the Type K format, increasing the correct score percentage and reducing test reliability, recommend using the Type X format. Alternative scoring methods are discussed. The highest priority of the American School Health Association is to establish a constituent school health association in every state. Common problems to be faced include: identifying and mobilizing possible members, lack of state support, and implementing a dues structure. (JN)

A survey of optometric educational institutions, conducted by the Council on Optometric Education of the American Optometric Association, is described. An experiential program designed to attract minority students to health careers and to affect the supply and distribution of health manpower in a medically underserved area is described. A six-year follow-up study of participants and a matched comparison group of nonparticipants indicate the value of the program. (Author/MLW)

In 1971 the National Library of Medicine underwrote the promotion of computer technology integration into clinical medicine by providing graduate-level training for faculty members in the health sciences. The experience of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in the implementation of an NLM training grant is reported. (MLW)

Reviews aspects of a study conducted to compile data concerning numerous features of allied health education programs in Wisconsin. Some of the problems in data collection, retrieval, and reporting are summarized. The author makes suggestions for gaining support and increasing participation in such endeavors among different groups. (Author/CT)

A study to determine differences between graduating and withdrawing students in the University of Minnesota Dental Hygiene program is discussed. The identification of differences may prove useful in the selection process for future classes through identification of students likely to complete their education. (MLW)

The Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory, with a vocational title called Optometry, was used to profile a sample of second-year optometry students and to compare them with samples of practicing optometrists. One conclusion questions these students' compatibility with older practitioners. (MLW)

This article describes the results of a followup study of graduates of a joint program in allied health teacher education and administration. The article examines the graduates' current activities, locations, and job satisfaction and discusses the success of the program in reaching its goals. (Author/CT)

Although diversity is a characteristic of allied health school faculty, it can be a source of inequitable evaluation. Growth contracting, based on self-assessment and organizational goals, provides a way to assess faculty performance more fairly. (Author/SK)
