A sample of 16 older mentally retarded persons (mean age, 61 years, mean IQ 62), who were originally studied in 1960-61 following release from a state hospital and subsequently followed up in 1972-73 and 1982, were reexamined. Surveyed 660 students, 330 faculty, 130 professional staff and 78 residence hall staff to assess the educational environment of the residence halls. All groups perceived residents halls as a pleasant experience but agreed that appropriate levels of quiet were not maintained. Several recommendations are presented. (JAC)
