Changes wrought and unsucessfully attempted in the research universities in the past decade are outlined, and the reasons discussed. The lack of positive change is seen to stem from the place of the research university in the higher education system, the institutions' diversity, and the role of faculty. Suggests that while adaptation is a product of various factors, it is less dependent on individual traits than on whether immigrants are incorporated into the primary, secondary, and enclave sectors of the economy. Nine locally initiated projects designed to improve the connections for problem solving between urban schools and the community were examined. The teacher has a role in providing objectives and valid social interpretation which will unify the society as it responds to the various crises.
