Gage, N. L.; Needels, Margaret C. – Elementary School Journal, 1989
Reviews the conceptualization, methodology, productivity, interpretation, and application of teaching research which focuses on the relation between classroom processes (teaching) and products (what students learn). (DE)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Classroom Research, Research Design, Research Methodology

Morley, Donald Dean – Human Communication Research, 1988
Argues that generalizing to message populations by treating messages as a random variable is inappropriate for complex messages, and proposes meta-analytic techniques for investigating biases in message samples and other methodological factors that can limit generalizability of communication research. (MS)
Descriptors: Communication Research, Experimenter Characteristics, Generalization, Meta Analysis

White, Sheldon H. – Young Children, 1988
Reviews the book, "Within Our Reach: Breaking the Cycle of Disadvantage," which takes a new look at research about and programs for disadvantaged young children and their parents. (BB)
Descriptors: Book Reviews, Disadvantaged Youth, Family Programs, Health Programs

Attanasio, Joseph S. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1994
This paper argues that inferential statistical analyses as part of group research designs do not provide the kinds of data that are useful in determining the efficacy of clinical intervention with individuals having communication disorders. Replication studies are seen as providing a more fruitful approach to ascertaining the efficacy of clinical…

Algina, James – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1994
Alternative tests are presented for the between-by-within interaction null hypothesis and for two within-subjects main effects null hypothesis in a split plot design. Estimated Type I error rates for the interaction tests and for several tests of the second null hypothesis are reported. (SLD)
Descriptors: Equations (Mathematics), Error of Measurement, Estimation (Mathematics), Hypothesis Testing

Seifer, Ronald – Developmental Psychology, 1995
Examines issues related to the design and interpretation of high-risk depression research, including the identification of symptoms and syndromes, categorical versus dimensional scales, aspects of depression to be considered, specificity of effects, use of process measures, and conceptualization of risk and resilience. (MDM)
Descriptors: At Risk Persons, Depression (Psychology), Identification, Measures (Individuals)

Hennessy, Michael; And Others – Evaluation Review, 1995
This article reviews factorial surveys and highlights their utility in designing intervention programs. It then describes two instances in which factorial surveys were used to develop HIV/AIDS-related interventions. It is concluded that factorial surveys have great potential for designing intervention programs. (SLD)

Bertolli, Jeanne; And Others – Child Abuse & Neglect: The International Journal, 1995
This article discusses methodologic limitations of four observational study designs (ecologic, case-control, cross-sectional, and cohort) that dominate the child abuse and neglect literature and identifies key features of an "ideal" study of child maltreatment. It proposes a new mixed-design strategy, which improves ability to identify child…

Rogers, Priscilla S.; Sherblom, John C. – Business Communication Quarterly, 1995
Describes a list of characteristics of significant research compiled by the Association for Business Communication think-tank participants. Presents a preliminary analysis of the list. Discusses frequently occurring words and their contextual interpretation. (SR)
Descriptors: Business Communication, Communication Research, Evaluation Criteria, Higher Education

Berger, Martijn, P. F. – Psychometrika, 1992
A generalized variance criterion is used for sequential sampling in the two-parameter item response theory model. Some principles are offered to enable the researcher to select the best sampling design for efficient estimation of item parameters. Topics include the choice of an optimality criterion, two-stage designs, and sequential designs. (SLD)

Bissett, Randall; Schneider, Bruce – Psychometrika, 1991
The algorithm developed by B. A. Schneider (1980) for analysis of paired comparisons of psychological intervals is replaced by one proposed by R. M. Johnson. Monte Carlo simulations of pairwise dissimilarities and pairwise conjoint effects show that Johnson's algorithm can provide good metric recovery. (SLD)

Allen, Craig J.; Epperson, Douglas L. – Child Welfare, 1993
Discusses shortcomings in research on child maltreatment, including a lack of sensitive differentiation across types of child maltreatment, and a lack of attention to differences resulting from perpetrator gender. Provides corrective recommendations and describes a new approach that enhances research sensitivity. (MM)
Descriptors: Child Abuse, Child Neglect, Crime Prevention, Research Design

Salganik, Laura Hersh – Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, 1994
Issues related to designing educational indicators with comparisons among similar places are presented, using examples from indicators of school and district performance used by different states. As an illustration, alternative strategies are applied to calculate indicators of state high school graduation rates. (SLD)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Computation, Demography, Geographic Regions

Rutter, Michael – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1994
Addresses strategies needed in using longitudinal data on psychopathology to test cause-and-effect relationships, including natural experiments, testing of competing hypotheses on mechanisms, study of reversal effects, multiple replications in different circumstances, use of designs to dissociate possible mechanisms, testing for dose-response…
Descriptors: Adolescents, Children, Foreign Countries, Longitudinal Studies

Liu, Korbin – Gerontologist, 1994
Notes that continuing progress in developing empirical information on different facets of long-term care service use has been possible because of improvements in design of data sets. Highlights some observations about progress in development of long-term care data and relationship between policy questions in long-term care and design of relevant…
