The mothers and fathers of 11 preschool autistic children were taught operant procedures used in teaching speech to nonverbal children. At posttreatment, the children showed significant gains in pre-speech and speech skills as measured by a 21-step hierarchy of speech behaviors. (Author)

Using a two-wave panel design, examined antecedents and short-term consequences of teenage marriage, parenting, and school-leaving. Findings showed that while these three role transitions are not greatly related to social origins, academic ability, or performance, dropping-out is more highly linked than the other two. (Author)

Examined the effect of the sibling structures of number and spacing, sex composition, and birth order on adolescents' perceptions of the power and support dimensions of parental behavior. Results suggest that research focusing on birth order must control for number of siblings, spacing, and sex composition of siblings. (Author)

This study analyzes adults authoritarian responses to vignettes of differing behaviors of preschool children. Single persons saw themselves as more authoritarian and were less child-oriented than parents. Males were less authoritative in a one-to-one relationship. (KMF)

Reports research on the communicative behavior of a hearing child whose parents communicated with him, from birth, in both signs and words. The child's expressive ability accelerated in both modalities and this is possibly attributable to the addition of the signed component. (PJM)

The value of employment for mothers is dominated by opportunity costs for the current parental role. Differences between findings for full and part- time employment expectations were the greater importance of extrinsic and intrinsic rewards, respectively.
