The present educational system for nursing personnel does not promote or facilitate upward mobility. The university must find a way to increase the accessibility and availability of degree opportunities to the nurse while at the same time preserving the standards necessary for continued legitimacy of the programs themselves. A short questionnaire to all the secondary schools in Connecticut revealed decreasing offereings in geography, mostly as electives, often as a part of the business curriculum, mostly by teachers with little or no training in the discipline. This condition is lamented and corrective measures are suggested. (NH)

Six key standards set by institutions of higher education are identified: the use of time for academic learning, content in the disciplines, level of academic performance expected of students, the preparation of teachers, cooperation with schools, industry, government to improve education, and the ethical behavior of institutions. The doctoral comprehensive examination is criticized for its potential harm to professional development because it fosters a myth of closure by encouraging students to believe that achievement of comprehensiveness is necessary to pass exams and achieve the doctorate.
