Social interaction and physical activity are important aspects of health maintenance for the aged. A holistic approach to the care of the elderly in nursing homes would involve a team of professionals who encourage residents to pursue such tasks as adaptation to loss, and maintenance of physical activity to retain function. The University of Portland offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in rural Roseburg, Oregon, through an outreach program based at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg. The program enables rural nurses to acquire the degree while continuing to live and work in their community. (SK)

The Adjective Rating Scale (ARS) was administered to female students in a public health nursing course, as a measure of pre- and post-course attitude change. Factor analyses of these results indicated fewer factors were revealed than are normally reported for the ARS. (MH)

In order to maintain both the quality of student learning and client care as well as make effective use of faculty time, agency staff nurses were used as student preceptors. The nurses visit with students to demonstrate techniques and participate in the care students give their patients. (CT)

Availability of nursing home beds was a strong predictor of institutional care. Higher rates of community care occurred where there were greater expenditures for protective, legal, chore, day care and social/recreation services and, in which there were more older persons in poverty and fewer women working.
