Wilmot, William W. – Quarterly Journal of Speech, 1971
Treats the concept of ego-involvement as an independent variable in speech communication research from a theoretical point of view by illustrating how involvement has been variously conceptualized in research projects. Possible ways to solve the difficulties encountered in past conceptualization of involvement are suggested. (Author/DR)

Stimpson, David Vern – J Soc Psychol, 1970
The results of this study suggest that people with a great deal of self-esteem and commitment to specific goals are not amenable to accepting the suggestions of others that relate to a change in their behavior. (CK)

Shine, Lester C., II – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
For multi-subject experiments with all factors repeated (a single independent group of subjects), three multi-subject behavior functions are identified and analyzed. They are based on Shine's actualized and pure single-subject behavior functions extended to multi-subject experiments with some factors nonrepeated (several independent groups of…

Stoker, Howard W.; And Others – Evaluation Review, 1981
The use of analysis of variance was examined under the assumption that the treatment had been randomly assigned to students, when in fact, the class had been the unit. Data support the idea that if one can randomly assign treatments to intact classes, consideration should certainly be given to doing so. (Author/GK)

Rosenthal, Nina Ribak – Education, 1980
An 18-week course on death and dying designed specifically for high school students significantly reduced participants' level of death anxiety. These results conflict with previous research on adolescents in which either increased anxiety or no significant differences in death anxiety were reported as a result of death education. (CM)

Weiner, Marcella Bakur; Weinstock, Comilda S. – International Journal of Aging and Human Development, 1979
Geriatric outpatients were involved in a group resocialization program. Comparison is made between experimental groups whose leader used group intervention techniques, and groups where leader played a nonintervention role. Experimental group members showed changes toward more active problem-solving approaches, while group members remained fixed at…

Hammill, Donald D.; And Others – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1989
Research articles published in 10 major journals during the years 1984-1987 were evaluated to determine how many satisfied the recommendations of the Council for Learning Disabilities' Research Committee on reporting subject data. Only 4 of the 277 articles included acceptable information in 7 recommended areas of subject data. (Author/JDD)

Wilcox, Rand R. – Psychometrika, 1992
A method of comparing one-step M-estimates of location for heavy tailed distributions is proposed and investigated. Simulations indicate that the new procedure provides good control over Type I errors and has more power than do some other methods for dealing with heavy tailed distributions. (SLD)

Reay, Diane – Gender and Education, 1990
In an effort to improve their achievement and confidence, girls at a London elementary school were segregated and taught subjects designed to counter traditional role limitations. Boys, meanwhile, felt their status was being undermined, and teachers were uncertain about the rightness of countering societal norms. (DM)

Pogrow, Stanley – Educational Researcher, 1998
Explores issues in evaluating exemplary programs, including the measurement of the degree to which the program is exemplary or promising. Suggests that comparison (control) group analysis can mislead researchers about the effectiveness of a program and suggests the use of gain scores to identify exemplary programs. (SLD)

Lindemann-Matthies, Petra – International Journal of Science Education, 2005
This study investigated which plants and animals Swiss children found most attractive and evaluated the effect of an educational programme on children's preferences for species. More than 4000 pupils (8-16 years old) from 248 classes participated in the study. Possible effects of the programme were studied with the help of questionnaires using a…

Packard, Jerome L.; Chen, Xi; Li, Wenling; Wu, Xinchun; Gaffney, Janet S.; Li, Hong; Anderson, Richard C. – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 2006
Previous research in alphabetic languages had shown that children learning to write are sensitive to morphological information, and that it serves as a resource that they draw upon as they acquire writing skills. In Chinese as well, sensitivity to morphological and orthographic information had been found to predict children's ability to read…
