Rabinowitz, Mitchell; Mandler, Jean M. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1983
Two experiments explored the differential effects of two kinds of organization (taxonomic and schematic) on retrieval of information. (Author/PN)
Descriptors: Classification, Cluster Grouping, College Students, Higher Education

Zimler, Jerome; Keenan, Janice M. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1983
Three experiments compared congenitally blind and sighted adults and children on paired-associate, free-recall, and imaging tasks presumed to involve visual imagery in memory. In all three, blind subjects' performances were remarkably similar to the sighted. Results challenge previous explanations of performance such as Paivio's (1971). (Author/RD)
Descriptors: Adults, Age Differences, Blindness, Cluster Grouping

Lathey, Jonathan W. – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1979
A 12-item stimulus list composed of three conceptual categories, each with two low- and two high- associated word pairs, was presented for free Ss recall to 20 educable mentally retarded (EMR) preadolescents, 20 EMR adolescents, and 20 nonretarded fourth-grade children who showed associative clustering in accordance with preexperimental interitem…
Descriptors: Adolescents, Children, Classification, Cluster Grouping

Vickery, Brian – Journal of Documentation, 1997
Introduces new procedures being used to extract knowledge from databases and discusses rationales for developing knowledge discovery methods. Methods are described for such techniques as classification, clustering, and the detection of deviations from pre-established norms. Examines potential uses of knowledge discovery in the information field.…
Descriptors: Classification, Cluster Grouping, Databases, Electronic Text

Weiss, Michael J. – Public Libraries, 1989
Describes the cluster system of targeted marketing analysis, which uses geodemographic analysis to develop understanding of communities at the micro level. Characteristics of some types of neighborhoods found in the United States are described and the use of this approach by librarians conducting community analyses is discussed. (CLB)
Descriptors: Census Figures, Cluster Grouping, Community Characteristics, Community Surveys
Newberg, Norman A. – Phi Delta Kappan, 1995
The fragmentation in many children's homes and neighborhoods is reflected in their schools. To reform the nation's urban schools, educators must find ways to take collective responsibility for students' performance over their entire school careers. Reorganization according to feeder-pattern clusters can help teachers from various school levels…

Shaw, W. M., Jr. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1991
Two articles discuss the clustering of composite representations in the Cystic Fibrosis Document Collection from the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE file. Clustering is evaluated as a function of the exhaustivity of composite representations based on Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and citation indexes, and evaluation of retrieval…
Descriptors: Citation Indexes, Cluster Grouping, Cystic Fibrosis, Evaluation Methods
Renzulli, Joseph S. – School Administrator, 1999
Authentic learning consists of applying relevant knowledge, thinking skills, and interpersonal skills to solving real-world problems. Students assume roles of firsthand investigators, writers, artists, or other practitioners committed to producing a product or a service. A Connecticut high school's video-production company embodies a successful…

Bookstein, A.; Klein, S. T.; Raita, T. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1998
Defines the notion of serial clustering of words in text, and explores the value of such clustering as an indicator of a word's bearing content. This approach is flexible in the sense that it is context-sensitive; a numerical approach may also be of value in assigning weights to terms in requests. Experimental support is obtained from natural text…
Descriptors: Cluster Analysis, Cluster Grouping, Information Retrieval, Information Seeking
Renzulli, Joseph S. – Gifted Education International, 2000
This article describes an enrichment cluster approach designed to create highly challenging learning opportunities that allow high potential students to identify themselves. The enrichment clusters focus students' attention on authentic learning applied to real-life problems. Guidelines for enrichment clusters are discussed, along with the teacher…
Descriptors: Ability Identification, Cluster Grouping, Educational Strategies, Elementary Secondary Education

Ottaviani, J. S. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1994
Discusses precision and recall in information science and proposes a new model based on fractal geometry for clusters of relevant documents. Search strategies for retrieving a group of relevant documents are reviewed; fractal sets and chaotic processes are described; and the new model is explained. (Contains 43 references.) (LRW)
Descriptors: Chaos Theory, Cluster Grouping, Fractals, Information Retrieval

He, Yulan; Hui, Siu Cheung – Information Processing & Management, 2002
Proposes a mining process to automate author co-citation analysis based on the Web Citation Database, a data warehouse for storing citation indices of Web publications. Describes the use of agglomerative hierarchical clustering for author clustering and multidimensional scaling for displaying author cluster maps, and explains PubSearch, a…

Gentry, Marcia; Keilty, Bill – Roeper Review, 2004
Staff development practices that successfully implemented long-term applications of cluster grouping in two districts are analyzed, compared, and reviewed. Parallel practices and differences are discussed concerning program beginning, implementation, and maintenance. Conclusions are drawn and six steps for use and consideration by others engaged…
