A general social class trend has been observed in the practices and attitudes of college students regarding sexual permissiveness, smoking, and drug usage. Of the socioeconomic classes examined, practices and attitudes appeared to be most liberal in the upper class, and most conservative in the lower middle class. (Author)

Members of a longitudinal study were classified on the basis of their drinking behavior. The core of traits which described the cohorts of each category of women drinkers were discernible to raters in the early adolescent period. Self-administered questionnaires were collected from 534 college students and analyzed by path analysis, which explained up to 47 percent of the variation in certain kinds of problem drinking. Studied 46 alcoholics one year upon discharge from a residential treatment program based on transactional analysis. Results showed 25 were abstinent and the other 21 were not drinking heavily. Analysis suggested that the abstinent persons had somewhat higher self-esteem and were slightly freer in expression of feelings. (JAC)

Findings indicate that differences in attitudes toward and knowledge of alcohol are related to both urban/rural and native/nonnative differences.
