Provides normative locus of control data for male alcoholics undergoing treatment. Results indicated that a score six or below defined the internally controlled alcoholic, seven or above, the externally controlled alcoholic. Scores of specialized Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) scales (the Prejudice scale, the Ego-Strength scale, and the MacAndrew Alcoholism scale) were related to the scores of the standard MMPI scales. Fetal alcohol syndrome is a pattern of altered growth and morphogenesis found in about half the offspring of severely and chronically alcoholic women who continue drinking throughout their pregnancy. Results revealed that regular users possessed significantly higher mean scores in overall self-esteem as compared to all other drinking categories. Alcoholics were more external in powerful others control orientations, more external in chance control orientations, more hopeless, and more Machiavellianistic than the nonalcoholics. Results support the findings of alcoholics' relative externality in locus of control reinforcement. (Author)

Data were collected from 20 couples with satisfactory marriages and 20 maritally dysfunctional nonviolent couples to evaluate characteristics associated with wife abuse.
