A survey of 69 authors of novels written as dissertations and 31 doctoral programs that have accepted dissertation novels is reported. Issues discussed include reasons for choosing this genre, factors in successful completion, program standards and procedures, assessment, previous or subsequent publication, and student satisfaction. According to the completed surveys (n=197), the programs tended not to include planned instruction about Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) for elementary students, and those that did typically went through the health education unit.
