Peer reviewedCohn, Elchanan – Journal of Education Finance, 1997
In a 1991 article, Jerry Paquette argued that private rates of return to schooling in Canada during early to mid-1980s were small or negative, except for those completing bachelor's degree or higher. This paper shows Paquette's (Canadian census) data indicate quite different results; surveys recent studies; and provides recent data to show private…

Peer reviewedWasserman, Stanley; Pattison, Philippa – Psychometrika, 1996
The Markov random graphs of O. Frank and D. Strauss (1986) and the estimation strategy for these models developed by Strauss and M. Ikeda (1990) are promising contributions. This paper describes a large class of models that can be used to investigate structure in social networks and illustrates their use. (SLD)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Estimation (Mathematics), Graphs, Markov Processes
Peer reviewedRohl, Mary; Pratt, Chris – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 1995
Describes a two-year study of 76 prereading children, examining relationships between phonological awareness, verbal working memory, and the development of reading and spelling. Indicates that phonological awareness predicted later reading and spelling even when simple and backwards repetition were controlled. Suggests that verbal working memory…
Descriptors: Emergent Literacy, Factor Analysis, Longitudinal Studies, Memory
Peer reviewedLeung, Louis – Telematics and Informatics, 2003
Describes a study that identified attributes that can characterize the Net generation and examines how these attributes, together with perceived seductive properties of the Internet (e.g., pleasure of control and fluidity of identity) and gratifications obtained from the Internet can predict popular Internet activities. Reports results of a…
Descriptors: Computer Use, Factor Analysis, Foreign Countries, Internet
Peer reviewedKim, Deok-Hwan; Chung, Chin-Wan – Information Processing & Management, 2003
Discusses the collection fusion problem of image databases, concerned with retrieving relevant images by content based retrieval from image databases distributed on the Web. Focuses on a metaserver which selects image databases supporting similarity measures and proposes a new algorithm which exploits a probabilistic technique using Bayesian…
Descriptors: Algorithms, Content Analysis, Databases, Information Retrieval
Peer reviewedAllison, Donald G. – Journal of Educational Administration, 1997
Reports responses of 643 public school principals in British Columbia to a survey on coping with administrative stress. Principals who set realistic goals, approach problems optimistically and objectively, engage in spiritual-growth activities, take minivacations, and are actively involved in their communities are likely to be in better health and…

Peer reviewedStanovich, Keith E.; And Others – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1997
Regression-based procedures were used to identify 17 phonological and 15 surface dyslexics from a sample of 68 reading-disabled third graders by comparing them to chronological age controls. Defining dyslexic subtypes by reference to reading-level controls identified the phonological dyslexics, but only one of the surface dyslexics. (SLD)
Descriptors: Dyslexia, Elementary School Students, Grade 3, Identification
Marton, Christine; Choo, Chun Wei – Proceedings of the ASIST Annual Meeting, 2002
Presents preliminary results from a survey of how women in information technology professions use information sources. Investigates the effects of perceived source accessibility and perceived source quality on the selection and use of information sources. Discusses results of correlation analysis and regression analysis that also examined…

Peer reviewedDunn, Richard – Journal of Geography in Higher Education, 1989
Points out reasons for using graphical methods to teach simple and multiple regression analysis. Argues that a graphically oriented approach has considerable pedagogic advantages in the exposition of simple and multiple regression. Shows that graphical methods may play a central role in the process of building regression models. (Author/LS)
Descriptors: Geography Instruction, Graphs, Higher Education, Models
Peer reviewedLautenschlager, Gary J.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1989
A method for estimating the first eigenvalue of random data correlation matrices is reported, and its precision is demonstrated via comparison to the method of S. J. Allen and R. Hubbard (1986). Data generated in Monte Carlo simulations with 10 sample sizes reaching up to 1,000 were used. (SLD)
Descriptors: Computer Simulation, Correlation, Equations (Mathematics), Estimation (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedGeske, Terry G.; LaCost, Barbara Y. – Economics of Education Review, 1990
Investigates the student equity effects of Louisiana's public school finance program in terms of fiscal neutrality and revenue inequality over a nine-year period, using regression techniques. Overall, Louisiana's system became less equal over the time period examined, while revenue distribution became more equal. Includes 35 references. (MLH)
Descriptors: Access to Education, Educational Equity (Finance), Educational Finance, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedMillsap, Roger E.; Meredith, William – Psychometrika, 1988
An extension of component analysis to longitudinal or cross-sectional data is presented. Components are derived under the restriction of invariant and/or stationary compositing weights. Multiple occasion and multiple group analyses, the computing algorithm, component pattern and structure matrices, and an example are discussed. (TJH)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Componential Analysis, Cross Sectional Studies, Longitudinal Studies
Peer reviewedJoe, George W.; Mendoza, Jorge L. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1989
The internal correlation--a measure of dependency in a set of variables--is discussed and generalized. Applications of the internal correlation coefficient and its generalizations are given for several data-analytic situations. The internal correlation is illustrated and the concept is expanded to a series of additional indices. (TJH)
Descriptors: Correlation, Equations (Mathematics), Factor Analysis, Generalization
Peer reviewedRozeboom, William W. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1989
Use of internal correlation for statistical analysis--proposed by G. W. Joe and J. L. Mendoza (1989)--is discussed. Focus is on the "content" question (what this application can do with the information that statistics contain) and the "eloquence" question (the advantages of this means of encoding information over other means). (TJH)
Descriptors: Correlation, Equations (Mathematics), Factor Analysis, Generalization
Peer reviewedde Leeuw, Jan – Psychometrika, 1988
Multivariate distributions are studied in which all bivariate regressions can be linearized by separate transformation of each of the variables. A two-stage procedure, first scaling the variables optimally and then fitting a simultaneous equations model, is studied in detail. (SLD)
Descriptors: Correlation, Equations (Mathematics), Factor Analysis, Mathematical Models
