Nandakumar, Ratna; Roussos, Louis – 2001
Computerized adaptive tests (CATs) pose major obstacles to the traditional assessment of differential item functioning (DIF). This paper proposes a modification of the SIBTEST DIF procedure for CATs, called CATSIB. CATSIB matches test takers on estimated ability based on unidimensional item response theory. To control for impact-induced Type I…

Koopmans, Matthijs – 1998
This paper discusses the application of Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) to the evaluation of the effectiveness of Basic Skills programs in the Newark (New Jersey) school district. Whether HLM is able to handle regression effects in Basic Skills examination data is studied. The analysis uses data from the Stanford Achievement Tests for…

Cameron, Lisa A. – 2000
This paper uses regression and matching techniques to evaluate Indonesia's Social Safety Net Scholarships Programme. The scholarships program was developed to try to prevent large numbers of children from dropping out of school as a result of the Asian financial crisis. The expectation was that many families would find it difficult to keep their…

Rathbun, Amy H.; Hausken, Elvira Germino – 2003
A study used data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-99 (ECLS-K) to answer the following questions: Which of the various reading instructional activities do kindergartners do most often? Who has opportunities to participate in the various types of instructional activities? and Are the various instructional…

Noble, Julie – 2000
This study determined whether using ACT Assessment Composite score, high school grade average, or both predictors jointly for college admissions would result in differential prediction or differential outcomes for traditional-aged and nontraditional-aged students. The analyses were based on data from 112,341 students at 79 postsecondary…

Weber-Burdin, Eleanor; Rossi, Peter H. – Journal of Social Issues, 1982
A factorial survey, in which college students rated sexual harassment involved in hypothetical situations, showed consistent ratings across student populations and judgment tasks. Findings indicated that the factors that determined defining an incident as sexual harassment were not entirely the same as the determinants of perceived seriousness of…

Grossman, Fred M.; Johnson, Kathleen M. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1983
The capability of the Slosson Intelligence Test and the Otis Lennon Mental Ability Test to predict academic achievement as measured by the Stanford Achievement Test is examined. The results indicated that the Slosson and Otis-Lennon significantly predict Stanford Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, and Mathematical Concepts subtest scores.…

Powers, Stephen; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1983
An examination of the predictive validity of the Stanford Mathematics Test included 426 Black and White eighth- and ninth-grade students. No significant differences were found in mean residuals by race. Differences of small magnitude occurred by sex in one cohort which indicated underprediction for females and overprediction for males. Sawyer, Richard – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1982
Rules are given for estimating accuracy of predictions based on a multiple regression equation. Formulas for moments of distribution and other parameters are noted. The approximate inflation in mean absolute error due to estimating the regression coefficients is a function of the base sample size and number of predictors. (DWH)

Charter, Richard A. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
Practical formulas for several analysis of variance (ANOVA) designs and models are presented which make it possible for readers to compute strength of association measures without the use of complete ANOVA tables. (Author/PN)

Information from state assessment programs may be utilized to identify the characteristics of schools performing in an exemplary fashion, so that effective practices can be adopted and implemented in other schools. Various effective school practices and findings, revealed by school studies conducted in six states, are distilled in this paper. (AEF)

Sica, Alan; Prechel, Harland – Comparative Education Review, 1981
Using data from 50 developing nations, the authors examine correlations between economic measures and educational attainment, to test the empirical utility of the dependency perspective in accounting for one important facet of internal inequality--the distribution of education. (Author/SJL)

Kinnucan, Mark T.; Wolfram, Dietmar – Information Processing and Management, 1990
Describes a technique for statistically comparing bibliometric models and illustrates its use with two examples using Lotka's hypothesis of author productivity and one example using library circulation frequencies. Topics discussed include nested statistical models, analysis of variance, regression, log-linear models, and the likelihood ratio…

Friedman, Lynn – Review of Educational Research, 1989
A meta-analysis of studies conducted between 1974 and mid-1987 on sex differences in mathematical tasks is presented. Methods used include estimations of: (1) parameters for a random effects model, and (2) coefficients for a linear-regression equation, all based on effect sizes calculated from each study. Differences have been decreasing. (TJH)

Revenson, Tracey A.; Felton, Barbara J. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1989
Examined degree to which self-reported functional disability and coping efforts contributed to psychological adjustment among 45 rheumatoid arthritis patients over six months. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that increases in disability were related to decreased acceptance of illness and increased negative affect, while coping…
