Hanlon, Mark J. – Journal of Medical Education, 1985
A review of literature on attitudes toward alcoholism, measurement of increased knowledge about alcoholism, the status of training in alcoholism, descriptions of alcoholism training programs, and methodological approaches to assessing such programs is presented. Holden, Constance – Science, 1985
Medical schools are finally teaching about alcoholism, a disease implicated in 20-50 percent of hospital admissions and which is a problem in the medical profession itself. Recent discoveries on identifying/treating alcoholism have helped to change attitudes and lead to model problems for medical students at Johns Hopkins and Dartmouth. (DH)

Streissguth, Ann Pytkowicz; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1984
Results supported the hypothesis that alcohol-related performance decrements would be observed in the vigilance and motor activity task performance of four year olds, even after adjusting for the effects of nicotine, in children whose mothers were generally not alcoholics but only social drinkers of varying amounts. Beck, Kenneth H. – Journal of Alcohol and Drug Education, 1983
Studied the relationship of psychosocial factors to alcohol abuse among college students (N=272). Goldman, Mark S. – American Psychologist, 1983
It appears that, although the cognitive functioning of many alcoholics remains impaired even after drinking has stopped, considerable recovery can occur. New findings now suggest the possibility of reducing cognitive dysfunction and enhancing alcoholism treatment outcomes. (CMG)

MacDonald, Roger A.; MacDonald, Barbara E. – Journal of Medical Education, 1982
Medical students who achieve sobriety are confronted with generally hostile reactions from directors of residency training programs.
