Peer reviewedZwinderman, Aeilko H. – Psychometrika, 1991
A method is suggested to estimate the relationship between a latent trait and one or more manifest predictors without estimating subject parameters. The method, developed for the Rasch model, can be generalized to two-parameter and three-parameter logistic latent trait models. The model is illustrated with simulated and empirical data. (SLD)

Peer reviewedChressanthis, George A.; Chressanthis, June D. – Library Quarterly, 1994
Provides regression-based empirical evidence of the effects of variations in exchange rate risk on 1985 library prices of the top-ranked 99 journals in economics. The relationship between individual journal prices and library prices is shown, and other factors associated with increases and decreases in library journal prices are given. (Contains…

Peer reviewedCarroll, John B. – Intelligence, 1991
In their reply to the present author's critique (1991), J. H. Kranzler and A. R. Jensen have still not demonstrated that a factor of general intelligence, "g," depends on, or contains, several independent factors. They have only demonstrated that an estimate of "g" is predictable from several independent components. (SLD)

Peer reviewedMiller, Timothy R.; Spray, Judith A. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1993
Presents logistic discriminant analysis as a means of detecting differential item functioning (DIF) in items that are polytomously scored. Provides examples of DIF detection using a 27-item mathematics test with 1,977 examinees. The proposed method is simpler and more practical than polytomous extensions of the logistic regression DIF procedure.…

Peer reviewedBelanger, Alain; Rogers, Andrei – International Migration Review, 1992
Examines the importance of place of birth on the internal migration and spatial redistribution patterns of the foreign-born population in the United States for 1965-70 and 1975-80, relying mainly on the Public Use Microdata sample. Age patterns of migration are also analyzed for different groups. (SLD)

Peer reviewedChatterjee, Sangit; Yilmaz, Mustafa – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1992
The importance of regression diagnostics in detecting influential data points is discussed, and five statistics are recommended for the applied researcher. The suggested diagnostics were used on a dataset of 24 subjects, and effects were analyzed. Colinearity-based diagnostics and diagnostics for a variety of procedures are discussed. (SLD)

Peer reviewedWetzler, Scott; Khadivi, Ali; Moser, R. Kevin – Assessment, 1998
The usefulness of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) (J. Butcher and others, 1989) for diagnosis and assessment of depression and psychoses was studied with 264 psychiatric inpatients. MMPI-2 profiles were sensitive to group differences, and the derived regression equations were stable and fairly good at classification.…

Peer reviewedPaterson, Lindsay – Educational Research and Evaluation (An International Journal on Theory and Practice), 1998
Survey data on perceptions of the ability and economic circumstances of their students of 304 teachers in 45 schools in Scotland are used to illustrate multilevel multivariate linear regression. Teachers in a school tended to share beliefs about the students, and these beliefs linked economic disadvantage and low ability. (SLD)

Peer reviewedMeghabghab, George – Information Processing & Management, 2001
Discusses the evaluation of search engines and uses neural networks in stochastic simulation of the number of rejected Web pages per search query. Topics include the iterative radial basis functions (RBF) neural network; precision; response time; coverage; Boolean logic; regression models; crawling algorithms; and implications for search engine…

Peer reviewedGoh, Swee Chiew; And Others – Journal of Experimental Education, 1995
Associations between perceived psychosocial climate and student outcomes among a sample of 1,512 students in grade-5 mathematics classes in Singapore were investigated using multiple linear regression and hierarchical linear modeling. Results suggest the existence of associations between outcomes and environment and the usefulness of both data…

Peer reviewedPeden, Blaine F. – Teaching of Psychology, 2001
Describes an activity that enables students to exercise their data entry, computational, graphical, and writing skills to learn the importance of graphs in good statistical analysis. Students use four data sets to enter data, compute Pearson correlation values, plot scatter graphs, and write results paragraphs. (CMK)

Chattopadhyay, Prithviraj; George, Elizabeth; Lawrence, Sandra A. – Journal of Applied Psychology, 2004
Although relational demographers have based their arguments on self-categorization theory, they have paid little attention to the underlying processes associated with this theory. The authors examined whether demographic dissimilarity affects individuals' identification with groups by affecting the group's prototype valence and clarity and the…

Quesnel-Vallee, Amelie – Journal of Health and Social Behavior, 2004
Using prospective cohort data from the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, this study examines the extent to which health insurance coverage and the source of that coverage affect adult health. While previous research has shown that privately insured nonelderly individuals enjoy better health outcomes than their uninsured counterparts, the…

Peer reviewedNakonezny, Paul A.; Ojeda, Michael – Gerontologist, 2005
Purpose: Our purpose in the current study was to examine the relationship between health services utilization delivered by means of the Homeless Outreach Medical Services (HOMES) program and health services utilization delivered by means of the Parkland emergency room and inpatient units among a sample of older and younger homeless adults being…

Olive, Melissa L.; Smith, Benjamin W. – Educational Psychology, 2005
This study compared visual analyses with five alternative methods for assessing the magnitude of effect with single subject designs. Each method was successful in detecting intervention effect. When rank ordered, each method was consistent in identifying the participants with the largest effect. We recommend the use of the standard mean difference…
