Finds no difference in test scores of students who underlined a passage and students who did not underline; for those students who followed their normal study patterns, the scores of underliners were significantly lower; and increased retention of underlined material was more than offset by decreased retention of nonunderlined material. Students completed the Approaches and Study Skills Inventory. Results suggest that small numbers of poorly attaining learners using dissonant study methods occur in a variety of educational settings. In two experiments involving 260 college students, the generation effect, which occurs when individuals remember materials they have generated better than materials generated by others, was studied.
