Compared the effect of study skills or adjustment workshops on college freshmen (N=304). Workshops were held the first week of the fall term, and students were evaluated at the end of the term. No enduring changes were found, but students who attended the adjustment skills workshop earned higher mathematics grades. (JAC)

Used an illusory correlation paradigm to measure stereotyping by mental health professionals on the processing of information about individuals. Mental health professionals (N=34) were presented cards that identified hypothetical persons according to sex and sexual preference. Results showed stereotyping did affect the processing of information.…

Tested an expectations-based model of the cognitive processes leading to communication apprehension. Found that expectations are a significant predictor of communication apprehension as measured by self-reports. Also important were communicative goals and the interaction of expected outcome and goal importance. (PD)

An instrument was developed for assessment of attitude-value orientations of elementary-age Indian children. Subscales represented value dimensions upon which Indian and Anglo children were hypothesized to differ. Factor analysis and analysis of variance data which address construct validity are presented. Literature on faculty relationships with new students (freshmen and transfers) as it relates to orientation programs is reviewed, and an experimental Brigham Young freshman mentoring program and its outcomes are discussed. Short-range goals were achieved, students were positively influenced, and program continuance was supported. (MSE)
