Social Support and Traditional Bullying Perpetration among High School Students: The Mediating Role of School Belonging
International Journal of Bullying Prevention, v7 n2 p124-136 2025
Bullying is a problematic behavior that jeopardizes students' well-being. Fortunately, social support seems to play a protective role against bullying involvement. Furthermore, school belonging seems to mediate the associations between social support and bullying involvement. However, little is known about the specific role that school belonging plays in the association between these variables. Thus, this study examined these associations, and explored the potential gender differences. Participants (N = 228, 64% boys, M[subscript age] = 14.76, SD[subscript age] = 1.32) were from a high school in Eastern Canada. Results from mediation path analyses indicated peer support had a mediated relationship by school belonging with bullying involvement. Multigroup analyses indicated no statistically significant gender differences. Results highlight the critical role of school belonging in preventing bullying involvement in relation to social support.
