Peer reviewedLovell-Troy, Lawrence A. – Journal of Marriage and the Family, 1983
Argues that the housewife role itself, which both housewives and employed wives share, is anomic. Data from the 1974 General Social Survey showed that although women in these categories do not differ on this measure once class is controlled, different variables predict anomia for women in each work-status category. (Author/JAC)

Peer reviewedBean, Frank D.; And Others – Journal of Marriage and the Family, 1983
Examined relationships between perceptions of marital communication and the choice of male or female sterilization in 313 couples. The wife's perception of marital communication was negatively related to the tendency for the couple to choose female sterilization, conditional on female labor force participation. Peer reviewedCockerham, William C.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Examined the relationship between age and perceived health status in 660 adults. Number of symptoms was the strongest predictor of perceived health status employed in this analysis, followed by age, education, and race. Persons over 60 tend to perceive their own health in a significantly more positive fashion. (Author/JAC)
Descriptors: Adults, Age Differences, Aging (Individuals), Cohort Analysis
Peer reviewedBretherton, Inge; And Others – Journal of Child Language, 1983
Results of a statistical study of language in 30 infants suggest that two acquisition styles (nominal/pronominal and referential/expressive) are developing in parallel. Only for children heavily emphasizing one strategy can a distinctive style be determined. Results at 20 months were only partially predictive of performance at 28 months. (MSE)
Descriptors: Cognitive Style, Individual Differences, Infants, Language Acquisition
Peer reviewedAnderson, Wayne P.; Holcomb, William R. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Identified five types of violent criminals (N=110) using cluster analysis of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory scores, and compared them on 24 sociological and behavioral variables. Results showed differences on 16 items including family history, drug and alcohol use, events preceding the crime, and relationship between offender and…
Descriptors: Background, Behavior Patterns, Classification, Cluster Analysis
Peer reviewedGreen, Bonnie L.; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1983
Studied levels of psychological functioning of survivors (N=147) of the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire. Results showed the group as a whole was more impaired than the comparison sample. Survivors who were at the fire were less impaired than survivors not at the fire. (WAS)
Descriptors: Adjustment (to Environment), Emotional Problems, Followup Studies, Grief
Peer reviewedFidel, Raya; Soergel, Dagobert – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1983
Presents conceptual framework for organization of factors (independent variables) affecting online bibliographic retrieval. Roles that variables play in research studies are described and examples considering various elements--setting, user, request, database, search system, searcher, search process, search outcome--are provided. Twenty-one…
Descriptors: Databases, Information Retrieval, Online Systems, Performance Factors
Peer reviewedHerron, William G.; And Others – Journal of Psychology, 1983
Premorbid adjustment, paranoid symptomatology, and orientation were examined as major predictors of moral judgment maturity in 40 schizophrenics. Results suggest the importance of cognitive and social skills in the development of schizophrenics' moral judgment maturity. (Author/RH)
Descriptors: Adjustment (to Environment), Males, Moral Values, Paranoid Behavior
Peer reviewedGiga, Susan; Redfering, David L. – Journal of Alcohol and Drug Education, 1983
Examined the relationship between personality traits and impairment experiences of 80 males who completed the California Psychological Inventory and an impairment scale. Peer reviewedScheidt, Rick J.; Windley, Paul G. – Journal of Gerontology, 1983
Developed an expanded ecological model of rural mental health to examine predictors of mental health in 989 rural older adults. Activity level and satisfaction with dwelling were the strongest predictors of well-being for both men and women. Overall, results suggested a less complex model for men. (JAC)
Descriptors: Environmental Influences, Mental Health, Models, Older Adults
Peer reviewedBrackbill, Yvonne; Nevill, Dorothy D. – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1981
Two experiments found support for the proposition that, when cognitive cues (knowledge of children's chronological age) conflict with perceptual cues (perceived height), the latter cues, although inappropriate, are more salient in determining adult expectations for achievement. (MP)
Descriptors: Achievement, Body Height, Children, Chronological Age

Peer reviewedHuba, George J.; Bentler, Peter M. – Journal of Drug Education, 1983
Reexamined previous statistical comparisons of two models for adolescent drug abuse using new statistical estimation methods in causal modeling not requiring assumptions about normally distributed variables. An asymptotically distribution free method shows that the models fit even better than assumed in the initial work. (Author/JAC)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Comparative Analysis, Data Analysis, Drug Abuse
Peer reviewedBeary, John F.; And Others – Journal of Drug Education, 1983
Describes drug abuse in the military. Survey data of military personnel (N=15,268) revealed that single, enlisted males under age 25 were the population most at risk.
