Peer reviewedWood, Donald A.; Erskine, James A. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1976
A review of the development of canonical correlation is presented and insufficiencies in applications from the literature are summarized. A list of analytical procedures for use in canonical correlation is detailed. The relationship between analysis and interpretation is emphasized. An example is presented. (JKS)
Descriptors: Correlation, Multivariate Analysis, Predictor Variables, Research Methodology
Peer reviewedLloyd, Dee Norman – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1976
A multiple regression was used to predict the grade in which secondary school dropouts would leave school. Predictors were twenty measures drawn from sixth grade records. It was concluded that a construct labelled "level of educational attainment" is the best determinant of both whether and when a student will drop out. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Dropout Characteristics, Dropout Research, Multiple Regression Analysis, Predictor Variables
Peer reviewedJackson, Daney G.; Clark, Richard W. – Journal of Extension, 1996
Responses from 39 of 58 Youth-at-Risk Coalitions identified the relationship between situational/structural factors and effectiveness of collaborative relationships. The best predictors of effectiveness were consensus among members, formalization of agreements, and resource flows from respondents to the coalition. (SK)
Descriptors: High Risk Students, Institutional Cooperation, Predictor Variables, Program Effectiveness
Peer reviewedTrusty, Jerry; And Others – Journal of Career Development, 1997
Analysis of data from the National Education Longitudinal Study 1988 (11,273 parents/students) did not support the assumption that parental involvement in career development is higher in families with fewer children, nor did socioeconomic status have practical significance. Female teens reported higher parental involvement than did males. (SK)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Career Development, Parent Influence, Parent Participation
Peer reviewedMandara, Jelani; Murray, Carolyn B.; Bangi, Audrey K. – Journal of Black Psychology, 2003
Investigated predictors of African American adolescent sexual activity, testing an ecological model of risk factors influencing sexual activity. Data collected over three years indicated that risk factors at the personal, familial, and extrafamilial levels of adolescents' social ecology related to being a virgin or not. Males and older adolescents…
Descriptors: Adolescents, Blacks, Parent Influence, Predictor Variables
Peer reviewedRupp, Andre A. – International Journal of Testing, 2002
Presents an overview of a wide range of measurement models currently available to the analyst who needs to make accurate and valid inferences about respondents and stimuli from data. Reviews models with and without predictor variables or observed and latent predictors, as well as parametric and nonparametric models, and models for order-restricted…
Descriptors: Measurement Techniques, Models, Nonparametric Statistics, Predictor Variables
Peer reviewedAmato, Paul R. – Family Relations, 2003
Although Judith Wallerstein's research on children with divorced parents has been influential, many quantitative family scholars have criticized her methods and conclusions. This article provides examples from the Marital Instability Over the Life Course study to illustrate the magnitude of divorce effects and concludes with a call for a…
Descriptors: Adult Children, Divorce, Emotional Problems, Marital Instability
Peer reviewedBrown, Roger L. – Structural Equation Modeling, 1997
Reviews the use of structural equation modeling for providing an overall assessment of mediation, the mechanism that accounts for the relation between the predictor and the criterion. A strategy for supplemental details is presented that measures the magnitude of mediational effects. (SLD)
Descriptors: Computer Software, Mathematical Models, Predictor Variables, Structural Equation Models
Peer reviewedHovey, Joseph D.; Magana, Cristina G. – Cultural Diversity & Ethnic Minority Psychology, 2002
Examines predictors of anxiety symptomatology among immigrant Mexican migrant farmworkers by assessing the prevalence of anxiety symptoms, examining the relationship between acculturative stress and anxiety, and determining the variables that best predict anxiety. Findings suggest that migrant farmworkers who experience elevated acculturative…

Peer reviewedBakker, Arnold B.; Demerouti, Evangelia; de Boer, Elpine; Schaufeli, Wilmar B. – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 2003
Structural equation modeling of data from 214 employees indicated that job demands uniquely predicted burnout and indirectly predicted length of absence. Job resources (physical, psychological, social, or organizational aspects that reduce job demands or stimulate growth) uniquely predicted organizational commitment and indirectly predicted spells…
Descriptors: Burnout, Employee Absenteeism, Motivation, Predictor Variables
Peer reviewedMartz, Erin; Cook, Daniel W. – Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin, 2001
Examines the relative risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among individuals with six types of traumatic physical impairments. Odds ratios and associated confidence intervals were calculated for each impairment in a group of veterans receiving medical services. Four of the six impairments were found to be risk factors for PTSD.…
Descriptors: Physical Disabilities, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Predictor Variables, Rehabilitation Counseling
Peer reviewedJohnson, Patrick; Throngren, Jill M.; Smith, Adina J. – Family Journal: Counseling and Therapy for Couples and Families, 2001
Study examines the effect of parental divorce and various dimensions of functioning in the family of origin on young adult development. Results indicate that parental divorce and family functioning significantly affect differentiation levels of young adults. Implications of the results for counselors and future researchers are provided. (Contains…

Peer reviewedOrbach, Israel – Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior, 2003
This article argues that bodily experiences and attitudes toward the body, such as rejection of the body, detachment, numbness, physical anhedonia, and lack of protection can facilitate acts of self-destruction. Demonstrates that suicidal individuals experience their body differently from other populations and that these are related to suicidal…

Peer reviewedStanton, Cassandra; Spirito, Anthony; Donaldson, Deidre; Boergers, Julie – Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior, 2003
Examines the overall rates of common risk-taking behaviors in a sample of 109 adolescents who made a suicide attempt, compared to a matched control sample. No differences in either the total number of risk-taking behavior or the frequency of individual risk-taking behaviors were found. These findings suggest that suicide attempts in adolescents…

Peer reviewedGilchrist, Lewayne D.; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1990
Collected data from first 100 subjects in on-going longitudinal study of drug use before and during pregnancy in adolescence. Findings from unmarried pregnant adolescents revealed that, although lifetime prevalence of drug use was relatively high, substance use declined voluntarily and substantially during pregnancy. Prepregnancy drug use…
