Conducted two studies in which subjects (N=345) read descriptions of stereotypic behavior displayed by a seven-year-old boy or girl and predicted adult personality attributes. Results showed that irrespective of sex, the feminine child was predicted to be happier, more mature, less self-centered, and more expressive. (LLL)

Tested eight hypotheses concerning relationships between socioeconomic status, sex, work importance, and career maturity with high school students (N=382). Results indicated that work salience (but not socioeconomic status--and sex only slightly) is directly related to career maturity. (LLL)

Investigated the response of 90 preschool children to their parents' divorce by looking at the cumulative effects of stressful life events, as reported by mothers and preschool teachers. Explored two alternative conceptualizations of transportation opportunity, one based on dependency and the other on expressed need for additional transportation, for a sample of 231 rural elderly persons. Surveyed 308 elderly persons to examine how young they feel and why. Results indicated feeling younger than one's age was associated with psychological health even when the effects of several confounding variables were statistically controlled. Attempts to determine the relationship between self-concept and the academic readiness of kindergarten children using a sample of 49 children from four to six years of age. Also investigated the relationship between self-concept and other variables such as educational level of parents, family income, and marital status of parents. (RH)

Examined marital cohesion as a component of marital adjustment. Seven variables related to adjustment were entered into a path model. Over 36 percent of the variance in cohesion was explained by the model. Surveyed 99 adolescents to quantify the behavioral cues used to identify their peers as depressed. The results indicated that social isolation was an important component of adolescents' concepts of depression among their peers. Records of 63 medical school graduates were examined for predictors of achievement on in-training examinations in anesthesia and orthopedic surgery.
