Three-Dimensional Sources of Academic Contingent Self-Worth and Their Links to Perfectionism and Academic Emotions: Identifying the Least Vulnerable Source
Educational Psychology, v45 n4 p437-456 2025
This study explored the source classification of academic contingent self-worth (ACSW) and analysed its adaptability through its relation to perfectionism and academic emotions. The participants were 1,494 junior high school students, and structural equation modelling was used. The results were as follows: (a) the three-dimensional sources of ACSW -- ACSW that depends on others' evaluation, personal normative evaluation, and personal absolute evaluation - were revealed. (b) Relatively external ACSW (ACSW that depends on others' evaluation and personal normative evaluation) mediated the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and anxiety; ACSW based on personal normative/absolute evaluation mediated the relationship between self-oriented perfectionism and anxiety; relatively internal ACSW (ACSW based on personal absolute evaluation) mediated the relationship between self-oriented perfectionism and enjoyment. Therefore, reducing perfectionism may lower ACSW and anxiety; replacing relatively external ACSW with relatively internal ACSW may evoke enjoyment and reduce anxiety, though anxiety may still not be completely eliminated.
