Bosco, Joseph A. – Adult Literacy and Basic Education, 1977
Utilizing Peel's and Hutson's instrumentations, the levels of abstraction of forty-one adult basic education students were assessed and then related to reading comprehension. The seven major findings indicated that there is a relationship between level of abstraction and reading comprehension. (EM)

Weber, Larry J.; Hunt, Thomas C. – Improving College and University Teaching, 1977
The effects of an innovative method of instruction on cognitive and attitudinal outcomes were examined. The method combined the techniques of large and small group instruction. Findings suggest that large group instruction, when combined with small group interaction, may provide a satisfactory alternative to traditional instruction. (LBH)

Black children (N=233) from three age levels and two socioeconomic (SES) levels were given five Piagetian tasks to determine if differences in sex were associated with differences in cognitive development levels. Results showed that higher SES children performed better than lower SES children on all five measures of reasoning, seriation,…

Caliste, E. R. – Performance and Instruction, 1985
A study was conducted to establish an equation for predicting group embedded figures test (GEFT) scores using Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills (CTBS) scores for reading and social studies, grade point averages, socioeconomic status, and student attitudes as predictor variables, and to determine correlation between these variables and the GEFT.…

Peer reviewedHopkins, Kenneth D. – American Educational Research Journal, 1984
In behavior research using cognitive and affective measures, there is often incongruity between the statistical analysis employed and the intended inference. This paper argues that incorporating items as levels of a random facet via generalizability theory allows the statistical examination of the inferential question in the desired universe of…

Heritage, Margaret; Vendlinski, Terry – National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST), 2006
Teachers' knowledge of mathematics is pivotal to their capacity to provide effective mathematics instruction and to their ability to assess student learning (Ball, Hill, & Bass, 2005; Ma, 1999; Schifter, 1999). The National Council for the Teaching of Mathematics (NCTM, 2000) makes it clear that teachers need knowledge of the whole domain as well…

Peer reviewedGettinger, Maribeth; Lyon, Mark A. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1983
Based on Carroll's model of school learning, this study sought to identify factors to help explain the discrepancy between time needed for learning and time actually spent in learning. Ninety-six boys were required to read and reread a passage until 100 percent accuracy was achieved on a criterion test. (Author/PN)
