Cronin, Blaise; And Others – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1993
Analyzes the scale and significance of acknowledgment behavior in 10 highly ranked sociology journals over a 10-year period. Peer interactive communication is discussed; correlation between frequency of acknowledgment and frequency of citation is examined; and incorporating acknowledgment data into the academic audit process is considered.…

Livingston, Samuel A. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1993
The extent to which log-linear smoothing could improve the accuracy of common-item equating by the chained equipercentile method in small samples of examinees was investigated with responses from a 100-item test and 93,283 examinees. Smoothing reduced the sample size required for a given degree of accuracy. (SLD)

Kahng, SungWoo; Iwata, Brian A.; Fischer, Sonya M.; Page, Terry J.; Treadwell, Kimberli R. H.; Williams, Don E.; Smith, Richard G. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1998
A large-scale analysis was conducted of problem behavior by observing 20 individuals living in residential facilities. Data were converted into scatter plot formats. When the data were transformed into aggregate "control charts," 12 of 15 sets of data revealed 30-minute intervals during which problem behavior was more likely to occur.…

Parshall, Cynthia G.; Kromrey, Jeffrey D. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1996
Power and Type I error rates were estimated for contingency tables with small sample sizes for the following four types of tests: (1) Pearson's chi-square; (2) chi-square with Yates's continuity correction; (3) the likelihood ratio test; and (4) Fisher's Exact Test. Various marginal distributions, sample sizes, and effect sizes were examined. (SLD)

Yuan, Ke-Hai; Bentler, Peter M.; Chan, Wai – Psychometrika, 2004
Data in social and behavioral sciences typically possess heavy tails. Structural equation modeling is commonly used in analyzing interrelations among variables of such data. Classical methods for structural equation modeling fit a proposed model to the sample covariance matrix, which can lead to very inefficient parameter estimates. By fitting a…

Kistner, Emily O.; Muller, Keith E. – Psychometrika, 2004
Intraclass correlation and Cronbach's alpha are widely used to describe reliability of tests and measurements. Even with Gaussian data, exact distributions are known only for compound symmetric covariance (equal variances and equal correlations). Recently, large sample Gaussian approximations were derived for the distribution functions. New exact…

Richardson, Mary; Gabrosek, John; Reischman, Diann; Curtiss, Phyliss – Journal of Statistics Education, 2004
In this paper we describe an interactive activity that illustrates simple linear regression. Students collect data and analyze it using simple linear regression techniques taught in an introductory applied statistics course. The activity is extended to illustrate checks for regression assumptions and regression diagnostics taught in an…

Reading, Chris; Reid, Jackie – Statistics Education Research Journal, 2006
Recent research into students' reasoning about variation refers specifically to notions of distribution that emerge. This paper reports on research where written responses, from tertiary introductory statistics students, were coded according to the level of consideration of variation. A hierarchy of reasoning about distribution is proposed, based…

Van Blerkom, Dianna L.; Van Blerkom, Malcolm L.; Bertsch, Sharon – Journal of College Reading and Learning, 2006
One hundred nine college students participated in an experiment that involved reading a passage and responding to a 20-item multiple choice test. The students were randomly assigned to one of four groups. The four conditions involved reading and copying, reading and highlighting, reading and taking notes, and reading and generating questions.…

Rufino, Cesar C. – Asia Pacific Education Review, 2006
A flexible one-output and two-input cost function is estimated for the degree program offerings of public and private higher educational institutions (HEIs) of the Philippines, employing the data from a nationally representative sample of 29 HEIs. This model, called Flexible Fixed Cost Quadratic cost function includes as output--full time…

Bryan, Joel Arthur – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2006
Preservice elementary teachers in a conceptual physics course were given multiple resources to use during several inquiry activities in order to investigate how materials were chosen, used, and valued. These students performed significantly better on assessment items related to the inquiry physics activities than on items related to traditional…

Morrisson, Christian; Murtin, Fabrice – Centre for the Economics of Education (NJ1), 2009
Global economic transformations have never been as dramatic as in the twentieth century. Most countries have experienced radical changes in the standards of income per capita, technology, fertility, mortality, income inequality and the extent of democracy in the course of the past century. It is the goal of many disciplines--economics, history,…

Zwick, Rebecca – 1995
This paper describes a study, now in progress, of new methods for representing the sampling variability of Mantel-Haenszel differential item functioning (DIF) results, based on the system for categorizing the severity of DIF that is now in place at the Educational Testing Service. The methods, which involve a Bayesian elaboration of procedures…

Lambert, Richard G.; Curlette, William L. – 1995
Validity generalization meta-analysis (VG) examines the extent to which the validity of an instrument can be transported across settings. VG offers correction and summarization procedures designed in part to remove the effects of statistical artifacts on estimates of association between criterion and predictor. By employing a random effects model,…

Kelley, D. Lynn; And Others – 1994
The Type I error and power properties of the 2x2x2 analysis of variance (ANOVA) and tests developed by McSweeney (1967), Bradley (1979), Harwell-Serlin (1989; Harwell, 1991), and Blair-Sawilowsky (1990) were compared using Monte Carlo methods. The ANOVA was superior under the Gaussian and uniform distributions. The Blair-Sawilowsky test was…
