Charters, W. W., Jr.; Pitner, Nancy J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1986
This paper reports on the application of Yukl's Management Behavior Survey in 47 elementary schools. Three problems with the instrument are discussed: (1) lack of response; (2) interrater disagreement; and (3) ceiling effects. The dimensionality of the measure is evaluated through factor analysis. Swaminathan, Hariharan; Gifford, Janice A. – Psychometrika, 1986
A joint Bayesian estimation procedure for estimating parameters in the three-parameter logistic model is developed. Simulation studies show that the Bayesian procedure (1) ensures that the estimates stay in the parameter space and (2) produces better estimates than the joint maximum likelihood procedure. Wilcox, Rand R.; Charlin, Ventura L. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1986
This paper investigates three methods for comparing medians rather than means in studying two independent treatment groups. The method that gave the best results is based on a normal approximation of the distribution of the sample median where the variance is estimated using results reported by Maritz and Jarrett. Sridhar, M. S. – International Library Review, 1985
Probes publishing and citing patterns of Indian space scientists and engineers, highlighting productivity; sources in which published and from where cited; frequency distributions of publishing in and citing from journals and conference proceedings; frequency distribution of number of references cited and self-citations; comparison of citing and…

Census projections, broken down according to age groups, reveal that the school age population for ages 5-9 bottomed out in 1982 and is now increasing; ages 10-13 will bottom out in 1986; and ages 14-17 will bottom out in 1990. School districts should prepare accordingly for increases in elementary enrollment. (TE)

Fedorowicz, Jane – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1982
Derives the underlying structure of the Zipf distribution, with emphasis on its application to word frequencies in the inverted files of automatic bibliographic systems, and applies the Zipfian model to the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE database. An appendix on the Zipfian mean and 12 references are included. (Author/JL)

Anderson, Ronald D. – Structural Equation Modeling, 1996
Goodness of fit indexes developed by R. P. McDonald (1989) and Satorra-Bentler scale correction methods (A. Satorra and P. M. Bentler, 1988) were studied. The Satorra-Bentler index is shown to have the least error under each distributional misspecification level when the model has correct structural specification. (SLD)

Marchionini, Gary; Mu, Xiangming – Information Processing & Management, 2003
Describes a series of user studies used to advance understanding of how people use electronic tables (E-tables) and inform the development of a Web-based statistical table browser for use by non-specialists. Results of needs assessment, prototype development, and user studies provide a foundation for understanding E-tables in general and guiding…

Swaminathan, Hariharan; Rogers, H. Jane – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1990
A logistic regression model for characterizing differential item functioning (DIF) between two groups is presented. A distinction is drawn between uniform and nonuniform DIF in terms of model parameters. A statistic for testing the hypotheses of no DIF is developed, and simulation studies compare it with the Mantel-Haenszel procedure. (Author/TJH)

Hood, William; Wilson, Concepcion S. – Information Processing and Management, 1994
Summarizes the findings of a recent study on the indexing practices used in the Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA) database. Descriptors, or indexing terms, from the thesaurus are analyzed; searching implications are discussed; and the relationship between the classification code and the descriptors is examined. (Contains 21…

Ballard, Terry; Lifshin, Arthur – Information Technology and Libraries, 1992
Reports on a study that examined spelling errors of keywords in a university library online catalog. Data are presented on distribution of errors by machine-readable catalog (MARC) field location, part of speech, origin of the bibliographic record, and error type. Commonly misspelled word roots and specific mistakes are listed. (12 references)…

Janes, Joseph W. – Proceedings of the ASIS Annual Meeting, 1991
Presents a new measure of retrieval evaluation called corrected precision, which refines the traditional measures of recall and precision by taking into account differences among users in their selectivity when judging document relevance. The formula for calculating corrected precision is explained, and results from an empirical study of relevance…

Mullet, Etienne; Paques, Patricia – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1991
Examined the effects of type of distribution and type of response scale on observed integration patterns in five, six, and seven year olds. Findings showed that the effect of two factors, age and type of scale, were significant. (SH)

Danesh, Iraj – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1991
An educational technique to calculate the lifetime of a comet using software-generated random numbers is introduced to undergraduate physiques and astronomy students. Discussed are the generation and eligibility of the required random numbers, background literature related to the problem, and the solution to the problem using random numbers.…

Feldt, Leonard S. – Applied Measurement in Education, 1993
The recommendation that the reliability of multiple-choice tests will be enhanced if the distribution of item difficulties is concentrated at approximately 0.50 is reinforced and extended in this article by viewing the 0/1 item scoring as a dichotomization of an underlying normally distributed ability score.
