Much of the violence in the schools could be stymied if teachers were psychologically prepared to deal with it and could depend on administrative support. Techniques for managing violent behavior are outlined, including positive attention, physical cuing, physical proximity, stimulus reduction, and positive timeouts. (PP)

Observation of classroom coping behaviors of 1,066 K-12 students and of several hundred effective public school teachers provides discipline strategies for classroom management. The problems that educational philosophers face in communicating with: (1) school of education faculty; (2) specialists in other areas of philosophy; and (3) educators and laymen involved in the schools are discussed.
