Reiser, Robert A.; And Others – Educational Communication and Technology Journal, 1987
Describes study of undergraduates at Florida State University that examined whether the criteria for mastering unit quizzes in a mastery-oriented course should increase, decrease, or remain fixed across units. Hypotheses tested are discussed, results of unit quiz performance and final examination performance are analyzed, and student attitudes are…

Vos, Hans J. – 1997
The purpose of this paper is to derive optimal rules for variable-length mastery tests in case three mastery classification decisions (nonmastery, partial mastery, and mastery) are distinguished. In a variable-length or adaptive mastery test, the decision is to classify a subject as a master, a partial master, a nonmaster, or continuing sampling…

van der Linden, Wim J. – Evaluation in Education: International Progress, 1982
In mastery testing a linear relationship between an optimal passing score and test length is presented with a new optimization criterion. The usual indifference zone approach, a binomial error model, decision errors, and corrections for guessing are discussed. Related results in sequential testing and the latent class approach are included. (CM)

Peer reviewedLivingston, Samuel A.; Wingersky, Marilyn A. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1979
Procedures are described for studying the reliability of decisions based on specific passing scores with tests made up of discrete items and designed to measure continuous rather than categorical traits. These procedures are based on the estimation of the joint distribution of true scores and observed scores. (CTM)

Peer reviewedStinard, Thomas A.; Dolphin, Warren D. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1981
The determinants of achievement were compared under conventional and self-paced mastery examination schedules in an anatomy/physiology course. General scholastic ability did not interact with method, but prior preparation in science did. Students with less science preparation showed greater achievement under self-paced mastery testing than their…

Peer reviewedFrederiksen, John R.; White, Barbara Y. – Machine-Mediated Learning, 1988
Examines ways in which intelligent tutoring systems can be used to develop models of a student's domain knowledge, problem solving abilities, and learning strategies. Cognitive skills assessment is discussed, and an example of a problem based tutoring system, Qualitative Understanding of Electrical System Troubleshooting (QUEST), is explained. (25…

Peer reviewedSchommer, Marlene; And Others – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1992
Epistemological beliefs and relationships between belief in simple knowledge and mathematical text comprehension were examined in 2 experiments involving 412 college students. Regression analyses indicate that the less students believe in simple knowledge the better their performance on a mastery test and the more accurate their assessment of…
