In the analytic process, "beneficial uncertainty" is aroused to help the patient tolerate uncertainty in areas previously shut off in his/her search for identity. Through this process, the patient learns to accept responsibility for his/her actions and no longer blames others. (PP)

Reports a case of multiple personality in which therapy was directed at the marital couple, rather than focusing on the multiple personality. The functions of the symptom in the areas of impulse discharge, superego operation, boundaries of closeness-distance, and self-object representations for the couple and family are discussed. Examines the development of cross-cultural counseling and psychotherapy in the United States. Reviews theoretical models, research on client-counselor differences, and approaches to counselor training in light of the special problems and skills pertinent to cross-cultural counseling. (WAS)

Examined the effect of high therapist disclosure on the willingness to disclose of high and low need for approval subjects (N=68), who listened to a recorded client-therapist interview. Results confirmed that subjects with a high need for approval expressed more willingness to disclose in the clear expectation condition. (Author/JAC)

Investigated the effects of fee payment sources on the duration of psychotherapy for 160 outpatients. Univariate results indicated that scaled fee patients had significantly more sessions than those whose fee was paid by Medicaid. Howard's comments on the case study method; Michael Lambert's critique of the study, citing advantages and disadvantages of single case outcome studies; and reactions of the researchers to the comments and critique. Presents a strategy for intervening into rigidly homeostatic family systems. Identifies system rules which reveal "nodal" themes. Describes four types of nodal themes and clues for identifying them within families. Suggests ways of using system rules and nodal themes in developing paradoxical interventions. (Author/RC)
