Peer reviewedMonahan, Terry – Physician and Sportsmedicine, 1986
Research into aging confirms that increased activity is associated with increased life expectancy. The emphasis is changing from high intensity exercise to activity. (MT)
Descriptors: Aging (Individuals), Older Adults, Physical Activity Level, Physiology
Peer reviewedZentall, Sydney S.; Leib, Susan L. – Journal of Educational Research, 1985
In this study, visual motor performance was assessed for 15 hyperactive and 16 nonhyperactive children under structured and nonstructured conditions. Decreased activity was observed for both hyperactive and control children in the structured condition, suggesting that structure is useful in decreasing activity level. (Author/MT)
Descriptors: Classroom Techniques, Elementary Education, Hyperactivity, Physical Activity Level
Peer reviewedKorner, Anneliese F.; And Others – Child Development, 1981
To measure characteristic levels of energy output at the very beginning of life, the activity and crying patterns of 72 normal neonates were monitored for 1-3 days by an electronic activity monitor. (Author/MP)
Descriptors: Individual Differences, Measures (Individuals), Neonates, Physical Activity Level
Peer reviewedTudor-Locke, C.; Jones, G. R.; Myers, A. M.; Paterson, D. H.; Ecclestone, N. A. – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 2002
Examined the physical activity and exercise habits of independent-living older adults from a structured exercise program, noting the contribution of formal and informal exercise participation relative to total daily physical activity measured using pedometer and daily activity logs. Participation in structured exercise was an important contributor…

Peer reviewedYoung, Deborah Rohm; King, Abby C.; Sheehan, Mary; Stefanick, Marcia L. – American Journal of Health Behavior, 2002
Investigated whether stage of motivational readiness for exercise predicted adherence to an exercise intervention. Adults randomized into a trial had the exercise goal of completing or adding at least 10 miles of weekly brisk walking or jogging. Baseline exercise motivational readiness was assessed. Adherence was determined from logs. Overall, 64…

Peer reviewedRafferty, Ann P.; Reeves, Mathew J.; McGee, Harry B.; Pivarnik, James M. – Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 2002
Assessed data from the 1998 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System to determine the prevalence of walking for physical activity and the proportions of walkers who met current public health physical activity recommendations. Results indicated that in 1998, approximately 38.6 percent of U.S. adults walked for physical activity. Less than 40…

Peer reviewedWarah, Aida – Journal of Adolescence, 1993
Views overactivity among anorexics from existential perspective. Shows that anorexic's mode of being is overly rational. Hypothesizes that overactivity may help anorexic achieve sense of existential permanence by dynamizing her static and too rational mode of being. Advances notion that overactivity may play adaptive role and should not be…

VanWormer, Jeffrey J. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2004
Physical inactivity has emerged as a public health epidemic and is associated with the rising obesity rate. A multiple-treatments reversal design was utilized to test whether pedometer-aided self-monitoring and brief e-counseling could help 3 overweight adults increase their physical activity. Dependent measures were taken for pedometer steps and…

Singleton, Ellen – Children's Literature in Education, 2004
Dorothy Dixon and Grace Harlowe, featured characters of two early twentieth-century book series for girls, were initially represented as skilled, confident young women negotiating femininity through traditionally masculine adventures. As each series developed, the nature of their active participation diminished. These adventure stories may be…

Kang, Minsoo; Zhu, Weimo; Tudor-Locke, Catrine; Ainsworth, Barbara – Measurement in Physical Education and Exercise Science, 2005
Missing values are a common phenomenon in physical activity research, which has a negative impact on the quality of the data collected. The purpose of this study was to determine empirically the effectiveness of an individual information-centered (II-centered) approach in recovering step-count missing values by comparing the performance of the…

Dyment, J. E.; Bell, A. C. – Health Education Research, 2008
An environmental factor of particular importance to children's physical activity levels appears to be the presence of parks and open space. Thus, in promoting children's health, school grounds merit consideration as a potential setting for intervention. This paper explores how "green" school grounds, which contain a greater diversity of…

Kern, Janet K.; Garver, Carolyn R.; Carmody, Thomas; Andrews, Alonzo A.; Mehta, Jyutika A.; Trivedi, Madhukar H. – Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders, 2008
The purpose of the study was to examine sensory modulation items on the Sensory Profile in individuals with autism as compared to community controls. The data for this study were collected as part of a cross-sectional study that examined sensory processing, using the Sensory Profile, in 103 individuals with autism and/or pervasive developmental…

Erwin, Heather E.; Castelli, Darla M. – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 2008
This study was one of the first to examine elementary student performance on the first four national standards for physical education (National Association for Sport and Physical Education, 2004). Motor skill competency, strategic knowledge, physical activity, and physical fitness measures were collected from fourth- and fifth-grade students (N =…

Gao, Zan; Newton, Maria; Carson, Russell L. – Middle Grades Research Journal, 2008
This study examines the predictive utility of students' motivation (self-efficacy and task values) to their physical activity levels and health-related physical fitness (cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength/endurance) in middle school fitness activity classes. Participants (N = 305) responded to questionnaires assessing their self-efficacy…

Cashmore, Aaron W.; Jones, Sandra C. – Journal of Research in Childhood Education, 2008
The child care center is an ideal setting in which to implement strategies to promote physical activity and healthy weight, but there is a paucity of empirical evidence on factors that influence physical activity in these settings. The current study gathered initial qualitative data to explore these factors. Child care workers from five long day…
