Excerpts from a speech made by the author at the conference of the American Compensation Association, October 21, 1970. Economic factors, job satisfactions, and problems of living experienced by blue collar workers are included. (DM)

Supplements the available scarce data on the attitudes of black males toward work. Finding were that: (1) black workers support the work norms of society; (2) jobs with occupational status are desired; and, (3) poor work habits may be due to adjustment problems and fear of dead-end jobs rather than alienation to work norms. Problems of training, retraining, and counseling older workers are examined in terms of some of their characteristics, such as slower work habits, decreased physical strength, adaptability, and lack of self confidence. Ways to compensate for possible handicaps through training and counseling are suggested. (Author)

Study results suggest that the "Work Study Student" has aspirations similar to those of upperclass students, and offsets his disadvantagement by working hard to attain his goals. (Author/CJ)

Betty Dillon-Peterson, the director of staff development for the Lincoln (Nebraska) schools, relates key experiences which shaped her career and also her views about how staff developers can work effectively. She advocates design of a special course of study for staff developers. (PP)
