This paper describes the emerging role of fathers in a society that presents obstacles to men who seek active involvement in fatherhood. A developmental, psycho/educational model is presented, which enables expectant and new fathers to gain support, knowledge, and skills in their new role, and confidence in themselves. (Author)

A survey of 160 Black and White fathers was conducted to investigate differences and similarities in their family characteristics and attitudes toward the father role. Analysis of data indicates that Black and White fathers are more similar than dissimilar. Implications of the findings for parent education programs are presented. (Author)
