Appplied formulae for estimating the validity of random short forms to Reynolds' data on six short forms of the Marlowe-Crowne. Results showed some, but not all, of the short forms considered by Reynolds were appreciably better than random. (JAC)

A survey on the methods and system of detecting hearing loss in infants in Canada's Maritime Provinces is reported, and results are related to other research in Canada and the United States. Results are said to show inadequate detection. Recommendations, including increased collaboration between health and education professionals, are made. (CL)

The comparison of Orthorater vision tester and Snellen chart far visual acuity results for 261 National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) students. Results indicated that a rear illuminated Snellen chart is an acceptable alternative to the Orthorater for screening postsecondary, hearing impaired students' far visual acuity. (Author)

Investigated the criterion-related validity of the Minnesota Child Development Inventory (MCDI) for 30-month-old children (N=122). Results showed that MCDI scales correlated with cognitive but not motor development as measured by the McCarthy scales. In a study involving 59 gifted fifth- and sixth-grade students, Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices test was a more significant predictor of intelligence than Meeker's Structure of Intellect screening form for gifted. The use of either measure in screening or identification was questioned. (CL)

The Test of Syntactic Abilities, a screening and diagnostic battery designed for deaf students 10 to 19 years old, is described and a computerized version of it is said to make it easier to use and interpret. (CL)

In an effort to validate the Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST), the scores were compared with selected demographic, health history, and physical examination variables of migrant and seasonal farmworkers' preschool children in Colorado. (NQ)

To examine the concurrent and construct validity of the Slingerland Screening Tests (SST) for Children with Specific Language Disability in the assessment of learning disabilities, 382 children in grades 1 through 4 were given both the SST and an IQ test.
