This paper deals with the change within women's lives as they perceive a diminution of the motherhood role in the "empty nest" stage of the family life cycle. It identifies certain aspects which portend for an easy or uneasy transition into another life style beyond the immediacy of motherhood. (Author)

Seeking to clarify whether major responsibility for a child's welfare rests with state or parents, the article contends that the valid concept of the state providing for the child has often been carried too far and that parents should assert themselves more in decisions involving their child's education. Analysis of variance of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory scales of 48 mothers and fathers of children attending a child development clinic revealed no significant effects of the mental retardation of the child, of the child's age, or of the interactions of the variables studied.
