The study demonstrated that teacher verbal disapproval can function as a positive social reinforcement for student inappropriate behavior. Thus, student behaviors thought to be punished are instead maintained or increased. A more appropriate method of dealing with misbehavior is presented. (ST)

The three groups were: (1) group counseling; (2) classroom restructuring; and (3) vocational information. The latter produced the greatest change among boys in their leadership and outdoor interests, while, for girls, it produced changes in how their peers rated their leadership skills.
