After listing 20 desirable character traits for the principal, the authors detail more than 50 functions and competencies of the principal in the areas of the learning environment, student learning needs, the instructional program, staff development, community resources, building management, and financial management. Discussions at the 1981 Wingspread Governance Conference focused on four topics: the current state of faculty governance; the faculty role in budgetary decisions; collective bargaining and academic governance; statewide boards and the alienation of governance from the campus. A 1979 followup survey of students in Syracuse University's Project Advance 1975 class showed the students to be exceptionally stable and high achieving. The evidence suggests that their experiences in Project Advance continued to play an important role in their academic progress throughout the undergraduate years. (MSE)

The controversy generated by the CUNY open admissions policy is described by its former president. The combination of tuition charges and the modified open admissions policy lowered student enrollment and the retrenchment of younger faculty lowered the morale of the faculty. (MLW)

Research conducted to determine the degree to which federally mandated citizen involvement had been achieved in 15 Texas Elementary and Secondary Education Act Title VII Citizen Advisory Committees demonstrated, through the application of typology, that at no point was a high level of participation fully accomplished. When traditional classes are followed by field experiences, faculty must recognize the unique learning/growth patterns of each student. Transitions in the social and economic circumstances of Western postsecondary education are: changing numbers of students and jobs; the shift from elite values to educational goals that promote equality; the growing significance of the school government relationship; and stability rather than expansion. Metropolitan State College's computer support system is described. Unique features of this system include: separate off-campus facilities for both academic and administrative computer support and a system where institutional research and administrative computer services report to the same office. A survey of faculty at three Australian universities studied their views of how recent enrollment and economic changes have affected workload, research opportunities, career opportunities, institutional life, and institutional response. The major impact of these changes was found to be on faculty morale. (MSE)

In 1979 Emory University became the recipient of the largest single endowment gift (from Coca-Cola's Robert Woodruff) to a college or university. Self-studies have been initiated to recommend improvements that will guide the allocation of the uncommitted funds. (MLW)

Business Administration students in five colleges were surveyed to learn their attitudes in six areas: theoretical, economic, aesthetic, social, political, and religious. Differences were found between business students and nonbusiness, between male and female business students, and to a lesser extent between class levels and schools. (MSE)

Despite several years of affirmative action and equal opportunity legislation, women in academe are far from achieving equal status with men, report the authors. The aftermath of a Pennsylvania judge's overturning the trustees of Wilson College's decision to close is described. A new board and new president found themselves confronted with a public relations handicap--Judge Keller's decision was almost universally perceived as governmental intrusion. (MLW)

A framework for presidents and trustees of institutions that are struggling for survival, which is intended to assist in making the decision to merge or close, and a process to use in dissolving the corporation is presented. Legal counsel, informing the publics, and student and faculty placement are discussed. (MLW)

To validate the quality of a college degree, administrators must make certain that learning credited is at college level, fits into degree requirements congruent with the instructional goals of the institution, and is assessed by technically adequate procedures and properly trained assessors.
